Three people were killed on the spot and several others critically injured in a road crash along the Mbarara–Bushenyi highway on Thursday evening. The accident involved a Tausi bus, registration number UBA 707AK, and a Toyota Noah, registration number UA 196AY. The crash occurred at Katojjo cell in Rwentuuha town council, Bushenyi district. According to Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson, the crash occurred at about 5:00 pm and was caused by reckless driving by the driver of the Toyota Noah. Vicent Agaba, a resident of Katojjo who witnessed the collision, said the Noah driver was speeding from the Ishaka side before veering out of his lane and colliding with the bus. “The Noah driver was driving recklessly from the Ishaka side then suddenly left his lane and rammed into the speeding bus. The bus driver tried to dodge him, but the Noah driver wasn’t stable so he remmed into the bus,” Agaba said. Another eyewitness, Joseph Ayesiga, also blamed the Noah driver, saying he was driving on the wrong side of the road and fled the scene after the crash. Robert Ayebare, another resident, attributed the frequent accidents along the Mbarara–Bushenyi highway to the poor state of the road, which he said is riddled with potholes. “Most of the accidents that happen on this road are caused by this poor road full of holes, and the authorities don’t say anything about it, we want it worked on,” he said. Tayebwa urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution while using the road. “Everyone must be vigilant whether you are a driver or a pedestrian. Let us follow the rules and regulations that govern road safety to protect our lives,” he said. He added that the injured victims were rushed to Kabwohe health centre IV for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kampala International University Teaching Hospital for post-mortem examination, as investigations into the crash continue
