Police in Gulu are investigating the circumstances under which a 52-year-old businesswoman, Claire Nambooze, allegedly took her own life at her home in Vanguard Cell, Laroo-Pece Division, Gulu city. According to Aswa West regional police spokesperson David Ongom Mudong, Nambooze was found hanging inside her house on Sunday, March 1. The incident was reported to Gulu central police station by her husband, Christopher Oola, who cited mounting pressure from loan repayments as a possible cause. Nambooze operated a small breakfast business within her neighbourhood. Reports indicate that shortly before the incident, she had left someone in charge of the stall and returned home. She was later found dead at around 4:00 pm. Family members reportedly told police that she may have been overwhelmed by financial stress linked to a loan of approximately Shs 6 million borrowed from four different financial institutions. Vanguard Cell LC I chairperson Andrew Nyeko said he could not immediately confirm the cause of death but described Nambooze as an active and well-known member of the community. “It happened last evening, and it broke me so much, because she used to sell breakfast to the youths around the area, and the boys are also shocked,” Nyeko said.
